Renters' Rights Bill to go to Report Stage

The Renters Right Bill is to go to its Report Stage in the House of Commons on January 14th.

The next stage of the Renters' Rights Bill - called the Report Stage - will go to the House of Commons in two weeks time, on January 14th 2025.

The Report Stage is when the Bill is debated in the House of Commons and gives MPs a chance to discuss any possible amendments to the legislation which were put forward during the committee stage in November.

Any MP may speak and vote on the bill and for complicated Bills this can lead to debates that last several days. This isn't expected with the Renters' Rights Bill as both major parties broadly agree on its content and it has been treated as an urgent priority by the Labour party, who will try to push the Bill through the Report Stage in just a day.

A Report Stage of a bill is usually followed immediately by debate on the Bill’s Third Reading, at which point it will have concluded its passage through the House of Commons. The finalised draft legislation then moves to the House of Lords. Once here,  it goes through the same stages as it did in the Commons, although the detailed Committee Stage – when the legislation is examined line by line – is normally less detailed in the Lords.

If the Lords disagree with the Commons, they can amend the Bill and send it back to the Commons. The Commons will consider any amendments made and if they disagree, the House of Lords will have to reconsider and will usually agree to the Bill as originally returned to them from the House of Commons.

The Renters' Rights Bill is expected to become law in the spring.
